WHAT IS RUMINATION SYNDROME?

Rumination Syndrome

Rumination syndrome is a condition in which people repeatedly and unintentionally, regurgitate undigested or moderately digested food from the stomach, rechew it, and then either reswallow it or spit it out.

Because the food hasn’t yet been digested, it reportedly tastes normal and isn’t acidic, as vomit is. Rumination customarily happens at every meal, soon after eating. The exact origin of rumination syndrome is uncertain but it seems to be caused by an increase in abdominal pressure.

Rumination syndrome is customarily confused with bulimia nervosa, gastroesophageal reflux disease and gastroparesis. The condition has long been known to occur in infants and people with developmental disabilities. It’s now clear that the condition isn’t related to age, as it can happen to children, teens and adults. Rumination syndrome is more likely to materialize in people with anxiety, depression or other psychiatric disorders.

DID YOU KNOW?

It Often Co-Occurs with Untreated Psychiatric Issues

The exact cause of rumination syndrome remains unknown but there are theories about it. Some physicians and researchers suspect this disorder is strongly associated with emotional stress, depression, and other psychiatric conditions.

It's Generally Behavioral in Nature

Triggers for rumination syndrome include illness and injury, but the condition is behavioral in nature. Typically, once regurgitation begins, the individual unconsciously associates it with feelings of physical relief and after some time, it becomes a learned behavior. The sooner treatment begins, the more likely it is that recovery will be quick and the habit will not take root.

In Rumination Syndrome, Regurgitation Occurs Automatically

In rumination syndrome, regurgitation is not intentional. It typically occurs within ten minutes to one hour of eating, at which point the previously swallowed food comes back up into the mouth. Individuals with rumination syndrome typically report that food comes up in the same state it went down; that is, undigested and without any vomit-like taste.

Rumination Syndrome Can Cause Halitosis

Bacteria from food that sits in the mouth after regurgitation, combined with stomach acids that work their way up through the esophagus, can cause this symptom
